TBBC Radio Hour: Ohio Warriors/Vince McKee

College football might be a month away, but the fight game never sleeps.

We’ve come to know Ohio as a hotbed for some of the best football players to ever take the field. We respect the great state for the basketball talents that have made their way to the college game and beyond.

One athlete that gets overshadowed in Ohio though is the fighter.417MkqXN9oL

Joining us this week on tBBC Radio Hour is Vince McKee, who realized the lack of love for Ohio’s greats when he started to write his new book, Ohio Warriors: The Story of Ohio’s Finest Fighters.

Vince and I dish out on the greatest fighters in Ohio history, the state of mixed martial arts and boxing, the inspiration behind covering the greatest fighters to come out of Ohio, and some great stories based around the interviews he did for the book.

Including his time with legendary Youngstown boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini — who is part of the Class of 2015 entering into International Boxing Hall of Fame. McKee tells us about sitting down with him and the one of a kind story that unfolded when he got to know him.

McKee and I also talk about the MMA pioneers from Ohio that helped pave the way to the great sport we know and love today. And the fighters today like mixed martial artist and former OSU wrestler Lance Palmer and boxer  Shawn “Showtime Porter” that are continuing to set the trend.

Ohio Warriors is a must read for any Ohio sports fan. If you are curious about the rich history of the fight game in the state of Ohio, or are just a fan of profiles of Ohio athletes, this is a must have for you.

Pucillo (Ohio St.) def Vamer_74I1750-L

tBBC Radio Hour: Mike Pucillo

March was a great month for Ohio State wrestling fans. The Buckeyes landed their first National Championship in the 94 year history of the program. Logan Stieber became just the fourth wrestler in collegiate history to win four NCAA titles.

Yet as a diehard OSU wrestling fan, I find myself just as, if not more proud of the decision made a little more than a week later by former 184 pound National Champion Mike Pucillo to come out as one of the first openly gay wrestlers.tbbc-Radio-Hour-itunes

Pucillo made his story public through a great article by Jason Bryant on the Open Mat, that shared his process of telling his friends, former teammates, and family about being gay.

This week, we sit down with Mike Pucillo on The Buckeye Battle Cry Radio Hour to talk about the amount of support he’s received since being open about who he is. Mike also shares how wrestling played a factor in his decision to come out, being a role model for younger athletes that are in a similar position he was, and what it will take for sport to one day look past athletes being gay as an issue.

Pucillo also breaks down what it has taken for Ohio State wrestling to become a championship caliber  program, how Tom Ryan convinced him to join him at Hofstra, the current state of wrestling and the situation at Cleveland State, where the Athletic Department will stop funding the wrestling program, and how professional wrestling such as AGON Wrestling Championships can help keep the sport at many different levels.

We also break down Mike’s 2008 National Championship match with Jake Varner of Iowa State. Varner, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2012, was 29-0 when Pucillo beat him in the final match of the season.

Pucillo won 43 straight matches at one point during his Buckeye career, was a three-time All-American and claimed victory 107 times while donning the Scarlet and Gray.

Thanks to Mike for stopping by this week.

The Buckeye Battle Cry Radio Hour on Buckeye Sports Radio is back with one of the best ballers in Buckeye history as Dennis Hopson, Ohio State’s all-time leading scorer, stops by to talk about the game of basketball.

We talk about his time at Ohio State under Williams and Eldon Miller. We also touched on the Toledo basketball scene and what made players so great from that Area.

Hopson and I also take about the current state of the game and his advice for D’Angelo Russell as he weighs the decision to return to Ohio State for his sophomore season or enter the NBA Draft.

tBBC Radio Hour: Braxtigram, Hoops and Wrestling Wrap Up

Its the end of March and man alive do we have a show for you this week.

First, we start things off by bringing you the latest news on what I’m deeming “Braxtigram.” When it comes to the NCAA, we always pull out the heavy artillery. Our own MaliBuckeye breaks down the difference between posting your photo on instagram and potentially damaging a program with the oh so meaningful NCAA Violation.tbbc-Radio-Hour-itunes

One week after the Ohio State Buckeyes started their march to a wrestling championship, The Lantern’s Patrick Kalista stops by to review the improbable run to the first team championship in the program’s 94 year history.

Kalista was in St. Louis to witness first hand to witness the strong start on Thursday and the final match of Logan Stieber’s career. We also talk about the emergence of Bo Jordan through the weekend, what the Stiebers have meant to building up the program, the aggressiveness of Nathan Tomasello on his run to a national championship match, and Logan’s place in Ohio State Athletic history.

While the Buckeyes were winning a championship in St. Louis, the men’s basketball squad saw it’s season come to an end in Portland. After an impressive overtime win against VCU, Ohio State was demolished by Arizona on Saturday.

Buckeye Sports Bulletin’s Blake Williams was there for both games and helps us break down the end of the season. Blake shares his insight on D’Angelo Russell’s high level performance against the Rams, helps us answer if there is any reason for the freshman to return to play his sophomore season, If he sees any coaching changes in the near future, and the lasting impression of the senior class.

tBBC Radio Hour: VCU/OSU Preview with Ken Kohl and VCU Ram Nation

There are no breaks for the Buckeye Battle Cry Radio Hour during March Madness!

Yesterday, We broke down the NCAA Tournament as a whole with Jacob Rude, the co-editor at Busting Brackets. Today, we  get get specific by breaking down Ohio State’s second round matchup with the Virginia Commonwealth Rams.tbbc-Radio-Hour-itunes

First, my fellow editor Ken Kohl swings by to talk about the Ohio State Buckeyes heading into the tournament and the keys to beating a very tough VCU team. Ken and I discuss how the Buckeyes can cut down the run and jump press defense that the Rams are known for under head coach Shaka Smart.

We then wonder if Ohio State’s interior play can outdo VCU offensively and set a tone on the glass. Finally, we break down the chances of Ohio State advancing into the round of 32, which would set up another rendezvous with Arizona.

To get the VCU perspective, we are joined by Mat Shelton-Eide of VCU Ram Nation. He gives us great insight into a program that has grown epic proportions since Shaka Smart took over.

Mat and I talk about the ultra competitive Atlantic 10, how the Rams have bounced back without team leader Brionte Weber, who will miss the tournament due to a major knee injury. We also break down why Shaka Smart is a perfect fit in Richmond.

Plus what he believes are the keys for VCU in a match up of two of the greatest coaching minds in college basketball.
