Recruiting today is a strange business.
Long gone are the days where 30 prospects were offered, 28 were signed, and things were wrapped up well before National Letter of Intent Day.
Now, offers go out like candy, and seem to be the currency that high school students use to determine who’s interested. Heck, we even talk about “offers” being different than OFFERS- non-commit-able and commit-able options for these young adults.
For their part, though the same “game” is leveraged… Coach Meyer has said that a verbal commitment means only that a prospect has that school in the top three, and with the proclivity of decommitments and “flips”, it seems that has never been more true.
Which brings us to the latest member of the Class of 2015, Carlton Davis. A standout safety from Miami Norland High School, he only has “three stars”, but shows a recruiting offer sheet from the best programs in the country. Miami, Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Notre Dame… all were “in the running” for Davis, and some may still be.
A 6’1″, 180 pound defensive back, Davis attended Friday Night Lights and gave his commitment to both Coach Ash and as a part of a radio program at 560Q- AM out of South Florida. However…

In addition, there was no “Boooom!” tweet from Ohio State’s Director of Player Personnel, Mark Pantoni. Is this telling, in some way?
Given that there’s always pressure to stay home, it will be interesting to see if this decision “sticks”.
That being said, he was a member of the South Florida Express 7 on 7 travel team last season; a number of players from that program have found their way to Columbus, including Ryan Shazier.
Ohio State would be excited to have him a part of the Elite ’15, though- from his video, you can see that he brings a hard-hitting attitude to his play, something that Coach Ash’s new defensive scheme would certainly find use for:
Welcome to the Buckeye Family, Mr. Davis… even if it ends up being only for a little bit, we’re excited to have you on board!
