Ohio State News And Notes- Silver Bullet Points: 9.2.14

Quick look at things inside the WHAC and around the country.

  • ChampsDaron Lee, Tyvis Powell, and Doran Grant graded champions. Devin Smith, Evan Spencer, Dontre Wilson, Jeff Huerman, Nick Vannett and Taylor Decker were the teams Offensive championship grades. Also Ezekiel Elliot was the player of the game.
  • Something Completely Different- The Buckeye Defense had their hands full of Naval academy triple option circus time Saturday. That being said the Naval academy is certainly going to be one of the most unique the Buckeyes will see all season.
  • Trepidations– Urban called it vanilla, I call it communion wafer bland but with this young offense in their first college football game Urban is not going to run the Statue of Liberty Dipsy Do.
  • Stuff– Marcus Baugh did not travel and is suspended for two games according to coach Meyer for “stuff“. The California native has had some previous issues within the program; here’s hoping he gets things straightened out.
  • UrbPresserEleven Seconds- Three seconds more than a successful bull ride… that’s how long Rod Smith held a block as a part of his responsibilities on a punt team. Consequently, Coach Meyer said he gave him some carries against Navy to reward the effort.
  • More To Come-Coach Meyer claims that more plays will be thrown into the mix slowly and that the Buckeye offense is going to need to set their sites on 100+ yards to be successful at a minimum this week.
  • Beware of Dog-Now that the defense is off the proverbial leash that was squeezing down and cut blocks, the D-line can play big boy, stand up football against Virginia Tech. I can hear Joey Bosa snarling already. Coach Meyer also mentioned that some of the young pups have proven they can play and will get time on Saturday, mentioning Raekwon McMillan by name.
  • Major Concern-According to Coach Meyer’s press conference he is highly displeased with the O-line play and Virginia Tech is one of the best D-line’s they’ll face all year.
  • Who’s Your Dadi– at 6’4 231 Defensive End Dadi Nicolas for Virginia Tech was very productive against their match up with William and Mary. 4 solo tackles and a Sack. Dadi matches up with 6’7 315 Left Tackle Taylor Decker. Physics tell me that Decker has the upper hand here, not just with size but with experience as well.
  • Stable Running Backs– Urban Meyer has the luxury of closing his eyes and pointing to his running backs depth chart for a starter this year. It’s fun to watch each athlete get playing time, however there will be a point where Coach Stan Drayton will pick a go to guy. Rod Smith earned some playing time this week according to Coach Meyer with an 11 second block on a punt return. I’m excited to see which back emerges as king of the hill.
  • Bud-FOS-ter– Defensive Coordinator for Virginia tech loves bringing pressure especially on young and flighty offenses. The Buckeyes have one of those. If they can keep calm under the pressure and trust each other, that allows for bigger coverage mistakes and more big plays like we saw from Devin Smith against Naval academy.
